TAMPA, Fla. — The good news for air travelers: Sunday was the busiest air traffic day.

Now for all of you driving on Christmas Eve - get ready for plenty of traffic.
A record-breaking 112 million people are taking to the skies and roads this holiday season.
The historic level is particularly bad news for anyone traveling by vehicle during that time. About 102.1 million people — a whopping 91 percent of all holiday travelers — are expected to hit the roadways over just 11 days.
Why the increased interest in road trips?
Gas prices may have something to do with it, according to AAA. Although gas has been relatively expensive throughout 2018, prices recently dropped to the cheapest national gas price of the year.
"The good thing is if you’re hitting the road today then a lot of the traffic and all of the people are already at their destinations," said Mark Jenkins with AAA. "So that’s good news so the roads should be a little easier to navigate."
As far as return trips, AAA said Wednesday will be the busiest day.
Jenkins said the best plan is to be patient, leave early on the roads and plan ahead for busy airports and roadways.
