HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for two passengers involved in a deadly hit-and-run in Hillsborough County this past weekend.

  • 73-year-old hit, killed on US 301 Saturday night
  • Driver, Kelsey Scheg, 24, charged
  • Two other passengers sought

Troopers said Gary Gogolowski, 73, was struck in the southbound lane of US Highway 301, near Ranch Road, around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Troopers said Gogolowski, of Brooksville, was driving his GMC pickup when his truck broke down near Ranch Road.

Authorities believe he was lost and started walking to find help, at which time he also made a phone call for help, a Hernando County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.  After, his wife called the sheriff's office to report him missing.

However, authorities didn't find him until it was too late.

Authorities said at some point Gogolowski crossed US 301 on foot and was hit by Kelsey Scheg, 24, drivng a 2008 Honda.  After the crash she fled the scene.

Officials said Scheg was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash and has been charged.

About 30 minutes after the accident, Zephyrhills police responded to a disturbance at the 38600 block of Alpha Avenue. There, they found Scheg and took her into custody under Florida’s Baker Act.

It was only after Scheg confessed that authorities learned of the crash in Hillsborough County, responded to the scene and found Gogolowski, troopers said.

Her car was found about a mile away from where she was taken into custody.

Authorities learned that two other women were also in the car with Scheg when she hit Gogolowski.

Authorities are now looking for those women.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 813-558-1800.
