HAINES CITY, Fla. — Teachers at Boone Middle School in Haines City recently took "Swag Surfin'" to a whole new level — they re-purposed it to teach math!
- Lyrics changed to rap about math equations
- "Math Swag" also borrows lyrics from other hip hop hits
- Team of teachers plan to create, share more rap videos on YouTube
More than 3,200 people have viewed "Math Swag" on YouTube. Math teachers Shecole Edwards and Breanna McKenze, along with math coach Tya Walton, uploaded and released the video on May 29.
"I'm hoping for millions of views," said Walton. "I want everybody to see it. Everyone needs to see this video."
"I want them to take away that we are trying our best to get these kids to see past paper and pencil," she added. "To see math in a different light."
In the video, Edwards, McKenze, and Walton rap about mathematical equations that many adults don't even remember.

The teachers said they finished their lyrics in a day. The hardest part was teaching the students how to do the dance that goes with the song.
"The original song is from my childhood, so they had no clue how to 'swag surf' at all," McKenze said.
Their students did eventually level up. It took about two weeks to put it all together.
The video was directed by Boone Middle School network manager Skylar Duckworth and edited by former student Aiden Bautista.
The teachers said "Math Swag" is just the beginning. They plan to add more rap videos to YouTube to show teachers around the world how to make math more relatable to students.
