"I wanted to inspire my daughter to not be intimidated by the challenges of the world in front of her," he recalled.
That's how he ended up writing 'Nikki Durant and the Terrible Can't', a story about a little girl named Nikki who travels to a place called THERE.
Along the way, she encounters some monsters, yet finds the strength and determination to prevail.
He wrote the story nearly three decades ago, but it's finally getting published.
"I don't want or need the money from it, I just want the book to get out there and I want to be able to do something positive for children in today's world," he said.
Yeager decided to donate all proceeds to KIND, a nonprofit helping children at the southern border.
"Both Nikki and I thought it was a very worthwhile cause, something we feel passionate about," he said.
Yeager was particularly struck by the stories of children separated from their parents.
"It's a shame, it's something we’re going to look back on as something we wish we had stopped earlier, and we're doing our small part to help that happen," he said.
Though 'Nikki Durant and the Terrible Can't' was written well before the current border crisis, Yeager believes there are some parallels in the message kids can take away from it.
He hopes the proceeds from the book can help the children get to THERE, no matter where and what that might be.
