TAMPA, Fla. — Nearly two thousand students attend King High School in Tampa. Julianne DePriest is a parent of one of them, and every day she worries someone is going to get hit crossing 56th Street in front of the school.

'Because the students have to cross over from the apartments to get to school, and it's so dangerous. They're actually walking in the middle of traffic, moving traffic, to cross over," DePriest said.

She is also concerned about drivers who don't yield right of way to the students when they are in the crosswalk.  DePriest has spoken to the school administration and they share her frustration.

"And I quote, she stated...'Once the student leaves King High School's ground there is nothing the school can do.' And that they've asked Hillsborough County deputies to help, but so far no assist," she said.

Accordign to Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Kris Carson, flashing beacons time for AM and PM school bells are already in place attached to the advanced school crossing signs.  FDOT will also install no pedestrian/use crosswalk signs at the median area near McDonals on the north side.  They also plan to work with law enforcement to assist.

Those signs should be in place soon, but in the meantime, the only safe crossing is at the crosswalks and then with the assist of the signal.

The state is going to work with the highway patrol and the sheriff's office to ensure drivers are allowing students safe passage to and from school.
