CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check out how well their personal vehicles fit them.
Chuck's evaluator was Fran Carlin Rogers. She is a national trainer for CarFit, so Chuck was in very good hands.
First, a check of how Chuck wears his seatbelt and where he sits relative to the steering wheel.
"That's 10 inches. I want to make sure our drivers are at least 10 inches," she said. "I'm looking at your chest, you're probably about 15 inches back, which is fabulous."
Why is that number important?
"Because your car has an airbag and it comes out of the middle of your steering wheel," Carlin Rogers said. "So if the airbag deploys and somebody is not at least 10 inches away, they're really going to be hurt by that airbag."
Another important note is the driver's ability to see at least three inches over the steering wheel.
"If they can't see three inches over the steering wheel, Chuck, that means they're not really seeing the driving environment around them," Carlin Rogers said.
Chuck's signals and blind sports were checked, along with making sure he knew how and when to use emergency flashers and brakes.
"It's one thing to talk to people about that. It's another thing to have a program that offers the opportunity to see how you are positioned in your own vehicle," she said.
