Mohan was one of nearly a dozen teachers parents at Potter Elementary wanted to receive our A+ Teacher awards. We only give out one per school so deciding which one deserved the award was no easy task.
We chose Mohan because on several occasions she gave rides to school for some kids whose parents have no cars. That’s commitment!
Mohan’s specialty is math which, she says, comes naturally for kids once they catch on.
"We get them to think about a situation where you need math,” she explains. “We put it in terms that are relevant. Something they are going to do in life that requires math. It makes it exciting for them.”
Some of the kids showed me their math boards where they were subtracting 2 kids riding on a bus with three others for a total of 5. There was little hesitation coming up with the correct answer.
Of course, this first grade teacher with 9 years’ experience teaches all the subjects here at Potter with lots of help from dedicated staff.
“First and foremost I love our kids," Mohan said. "Our families, our staff are all here to support each other and see the best in each other.”
That love of kids is so evident here where hugs and positive reinforcement are standard practice. This school is in a rough part of town so having a safe and loving place to learn is even more important.
"She is a great choice for the award,” say Principal Sharon Waite. “Not only does she push and challenge her students academically but she leads with such compassion.”
Cute faces and all, teaching can be a real challenge. At times it’s taken for granted and that can be frustrating.
“We are doing amazing things with our kids who are thriving even though they face some tough family situations. I wish others would value what we do. It seems like we have to constantly prove ourselves over and over again.”
There’s no proving necessary on this day when these bright eyed bunch of young learners are dancing with delight as we present Melissa Mohan with our A+Teacher crystal apple.
