Two officers were investigating a reported stolen vehicle in the area of Spooner Drive and Thonotosassa Road when the shooting occurred around 6 a.m.
Authorities said as the officers began to approach the suspected stolen vehicle, the driver inside the car drove it toward the officers, forcing them to fire their weapons.
"The officer had no opportunity to take an invasive action away from the vehicle so he was forced to fire shots at the vehicle and the suspect," Plant City Police PIO Al Van Duyne said.
The suspect was killed and the officers were not injured.
Family members identified the suspect as 25-year-old Steven Kerr, Jr.
They said he stole the car at a gas station last night.

Kerr was recently arrested on November 7 and charged with petty theft, resisting, grand theft, and fleeing officers. He also has an out of county warrant for Marion County and has been in prison for grand theft.
The officers have been put on standard leave.
