TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa could soon limit the overnight parking of boats and non-motor vehicles on city streets.

For residents on Davis Island, it has become a growing problem.

Many have complained about boats and trailers that have been parked on the side of the road for months, even years.

Members of the Davis Island Civic Association said it's not only an eyesore, it's a safety hazard for drivers.

"The boats are oversized,"said Michelle DiGiore of the Davis Island Civic Association.

"We're not the boat police," said Chris Mercer, a member of the Davis Island Civic Association. "We're not out there looking to cause trouble for people, but you simply can't leave a boat on the streets in the city of Tampa for weeks, months or years. It's not fair."

A loophole in the city code allows for this to happen.

Thursday, City Council members discussed ways to revise the language to limit parking of boats and non-motor vehicles.

Council members have not signed off on any changes. They asked the legal department to work on new rules and then return to council for approval.
