PLANT CITY, Fla. — Over the next two weeks, Plant City is giving its downtown area an overhaul that includes thousands of dollars in investments and beautification projects.
Here are five things to know about "Project Strike Force":
1. Project timeline: Eight teams, led by Plant City Manager Bill McDaniel, are working to complete 100 projects by the end of next week.
"We tried to message very well ahead of this, because we knew that as you see, there's a lot going on," McDaniel said. "We've got trucks everywhere, we've got 50 workers down here rotating throughout the day."
2. Beautification process: City crews are doing everything from weeding to new landscaping, fixing sidewalks and making them friendlier for those with disabilities, repainting light posts, and trimming trees. McCall Park is also getting a new sound system.
3. Business impact: Wenda Trunzo, the owner of Crazy Cup Coffee Shop, hopes the beautification project increases foot traffic and attracts new businesses.
"Already, new people come in our door every single day. They are very excited with what's going on, with what's going in," Trunzo said. "The businesses are starting to spruce up their businesses. They are putting more things out on the sidewalk, more attractive signs to let them know what is going on inside. It's pulling people in their doors, and the whole town is being cleaned up."
4. Who's paying for it?: The beautification project is being funded by tax revenue.
5. The goal?: Planning of Project Strike Force has been in the works for more than two years. The goal is to make downtown Plant City a more walkable place, attracting locals and visitors.
