PALMETTO, Fla. — Turning theory into practice.

Palmetto High School Marine Science teacher Steve Cucci takes lessons and textbooks and brings science to life.

His class has all the look, sound and feel of a science class, with his own special imprint. He uses experiments to bring lessons to life, making it real.

"Engagement. That’s the key," Cucci said. "Making Science real life and relatable to a student. That’s the key to getting the kids to learn. Not many kids can go home and get help from Mom or Dad on Science.

"Not too many, so I just try to make it relevant, real, hands-on and hopefully they take it home with them."

But Cucci is more than a science teacher. He also serves as an assistant coach with the Palmetto football team.

Cucci's lesson have stayed with his students.

"When you have a hands-on experiment. You’re like, that was really fun, and you want to do something else," said student Brianna Ramirez.

A hands-on, inspiring teacher and coach who gets involved with his students is what can make a difference with their success.

"If its fun and we have great camaraderie in the classroom," Cucci said. "They're going to take it home and share it with their family, then I've done my job."
