PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — A Pinellas Park school that serves at-risk youth has been suspended by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and a staff member arrested following an incident between that staff member and a student that left the student with a skull fracture and brain bleed.

Pinellas Park Police said Dontae Thomas, 34, of Ruskin, slammed a 12-year-old boy who was acting out to the ground last week. Doctors said the boy suffered a skull fracture, brain bleed, and two hematomas.

Thomas, a behavioral interventionist, turned himself in to the Hillsborough County Jail Friday. He's been charged with aggravated child abuse.

Jarvis West, a supervisor at AMI Kids, was also previously arrested and charged with failing to report the incident or get medical attention for the boy.

In addition to the suspension of the school's operations and staff by the Department of Juvenile Justice, Pinellas County Schools terminated their contract with the school effective Friday.

The district then reached out to parents to provide alternative options for their children to continue to receive instruction. Parents will have their choice of two different schools offering programs similar to AMI Kids, and a district representative said they will work with parents if either of the two alternative options do not work for them.

Forty students in total will be transferred to other programs in the wake of the suspension, according to the district.

The school released the following statement in response to the suspension:

"Once investigations of the incident are complete, we will partner with law enforcement, DJJ and the school district to review fully all of our internal guidelines and protocols at all of our programs in the 10 states we serve."

The Department of Juvenile Justice also issued a statement saying they do not tolerate youth being harmed by those responsible for their care and promising further investigation into the incident.

"When law enforcement has completed its investigation, DJJ’s Inspector General’s Office will conduct its own investigation of the incident to determine which policies and procedures were not followed.  DJJ will take swift and appropriate action,” said Department Secretary Simone Marstiller.
