LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. — A Longboat Key Police officer has been fired after an internal investigation showed over 50 violations of standard operating procedures.
- Longboat Key Officer Jeffrey Vogt fired for dozens of violations
- Vogt also involved in a deadly crash
- Vogt will not face criminal charges for that crash
Back in December of 2019, Officer Jeffrey Vogt was involved in a tragic collision with well-known philanthropists Charles and Margery Barancik.
The longtime Sarasota couple started the Barancik Foundation in 2014, and have donated over $50 million to educational, arts, and humanitarian programs in the Bay Area.
“They thought it was an honor to help the community,” Teri Hansen, President of Barancik Foundation, said.
The Sarasota Sheriff’s Office started an internal investigation after the crash, and in the process, found multiple violations made by Vogt.
According to official documents given to Bay News 9, investigator Chris Skinner said Vogt oftentimes exceeded 30 mph over the posted speed limit.
His speed topped 84 mph during the December crash.
After further investigation, Skinner says he found Vogt had 21 violations related to speed over 30 mph of posted speed limit.
In the documents, Skinner writes, “I asked Office Vogt if he was aware of his speed. Vogt answered no, and he still does not believe he was going that fast."
Vogt was also caught stopping the in-car camera recording system while responding to urgent calls and conducting traffic stops.
In total, Vogt had 50 violations related to speed and stopping the recording system.
Vogt was fired last week on March 5.
The Sarasota Sheriff’s Office said Vogt will not be facing any criminal charges for the December crash.
