- CORONAVIRUS LIVE UPDATES: In the Tampa Bay area
Bay Area schools have been physically closed for the past two months to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
Meanwhile, parents have been struggling to make sure their children got online school work done, and teachers have been working hard to continue online curriculum in a challenging environment.
"My prayer is that we go back to school in the fall", Heather Torres said. Torres teaches 7th-12th grade at McKeel Academy of Technology in Lakeland. "I miss being at school with my friends, with my students."
Torres isn't just a teacher, she is also a parent with three kids who have been doing school from home since March.
She scrambled to get online curriculum ready for students when the state shut schools, and since then has not just been teaching from home, but also making sure her own kids got their school work done.
Torres said the biggest downfall of school at home has been the lack of face to face interaction between teachers and students, which is critical to the learning process.
But with a week or two left in the 2019-2020 school year, the challenge will change, Torres said, to focus and patience.
"We are almost at the finish line. Just the last week or two be patient with your kids, because everyone is still on edge, still, even though things are starting to open up. But just be patient with your kids, be patient with your teachers. And teachers be patient with your parents and students."
Most school districts are set for Summer school from home this year, and all are planning for classes to resume as normal, at least for now, for the 2020-21 school year.
