WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. – Rain continued in the mountains Wednesday causing some rivers and creeks to rise.

Some low-lying bridges like the one on Casey Lane in Boone were covered by river waters, and the roads were closed. Since rain has been coming down for several days, the ground is wet, so falling trees and mudslides are a possibility, says the Watauga County DOT.

It is also important to keep in mind that as rivers continue to rise, that water moves quickly and is powerful. The Watauga Riverkeeper says this can be dangerous for people to play in, especially children.

"It's flowing, and it's flowing hard enough that it would be difficult for someone to stand up or wade safely in the river," Watauga Riverkeeper Andy Hill says.

Rain is expected to continue through Friday.

The DOT is reminding drivers not to go around barriers as it is unclear what is under that water.
