Daniele Zukoski has been pushing to get the playground accessible for kids with disabilities after her daughter, Iris, got her walker stuck in the sand in February 2019.

She met with the county Parks and Recreation department soon after that to see what changes can be made.

Then on Tuesday, Hernando County Commissioners approved the purchase of the new ADA Accessible playground equipment.

“It looks good I can’t wait. It’s never going to be 100 percent inclusive but this is a step in the right direction,” Zukoski said.

“She can use the playground as well as her friends can use the playground we have friends of different abilities so I think it will be good to incorporate everybody there’s a place for everyone to go,” she added.

The county Parks and Recreation manager is aiming to install the new equipment in mid-September, removing the old equipment 30 days before that.

The cost of the new equipment will be just under $200,000 which will be covered by the county.
