TAMPA, Fla. — MacDill Air Force Base is coping with the death of an airman who was killed in a Sunday night hit-and-run in Tampa.

Tech Sgt. Richard Padilla died when a suspect hit multiple people with his vehicle.

"Team MacDill is mourning the loss of another teammate taken from us too soon," the base said in a statement to Spectrum News.

In a military video from 2023, Padilla explained his role with the 24th Special Operations Wing.

"My role at D-Cell is to provide force protection for any members or units that we are supporting, along with training and combat arms," he said.

Tampa police say Padilla, 37, was walking in the 5800 block of Interbay Boulevard when he was hit.

The suspect, Jeremiah Bailey, 48, was later shot and killed in a confrontation with officers.

MacDill officials say resources are being made available for those who knew Padilla.
