Sea shells. Drift wood. Maybe a shark tooth. Those are the kinds of things you expect to stumble across while spending a day along Florida’s beautiful beaches.

What You Need To Know

  • Kilo of cocaine found on beach in Flagler County, Florida

  • Sheriff says it has happened before

  • DEA is investigating

But someone on the Palm Coast came across a suspicious package instead. It was tightly wrapped in plastic and looked like a brick of cocaine.

Flagler County deputies say that’s exactly what it was – about a kilogram of white powder.

According to the sheriff’s office, discoveries like the one made on Friday are not as uncommon as you might think.

“These packages have washed up on shore in Flagler County over the years, typically when the storm systems start brewing in the ocean,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a news release.

“If anyone comes across these packages or anything suspicious on the beach, we ask that you do not touch it and call us immediately. Narcotics can be lethal and must be handled carefully.”

Deputies with Flagler County’s marine unit searched the beach for more bricks, but didn’t find any. They’re now working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to figure out where it came from.
