The Weeki Wachee swim team may not know if they will be competing this season or not, but with social distancing guidelines in place, they are making sure that they are prepared for that if and when the time comes.
There may be new health guidelines in place and a new coach in town, but their winning mindset is the same.
Dakota Spencer is the only senior on the Hornets swim team. “Our goal this year is to get our relays into regionals and really show everybody else that we’ve improved,” he said.
Having missed out on the regionals last year, he hopes COVID 19 doesn’t take that chance away from him this time around.
“It is almost kind of a dream at this point,” he added.
With social media guidelines in place, Head Coach Meaghan Jeffers is helping the team attain their dreams. “We try to keep the kids social distance along the lane lines, kind of like spreading yourself out along the lane line, when its you’re turn to come up, you start on the wall and take your turn.”
Sophomore swimmer Grace Jeffers understands the new protocols in place but thinks it’s difficult to build chemistry with new team members.
“We’re just such a close team that being a part from each other is pretty difficult,” she mentioned. “We are keeping the spirits up and just trying to make the best out of the situation at this point.”
Right now all fall sports in Hernando County are postponed until further notice.
