MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- In an effort to start good habits inside and outside of the classroom, Manatee County schools created the “Mask Up Manatee” coalition.

“We have to have a safe environment for our employees and our children,” says Superintendent Cynthia Saunders.

The district teamed up with the Department of Health and other local organizations to stand united for their community.

Their mission? Always wear a mask in public spaces, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and socially distance.

“We can do more if we are fighting this battle together,” says Saunders.

On Monday, one faculty member at Samoset Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19, which was the first day the school reopened for staff.

The school closed immediately after and underwent a full sanitation.

“We are hoping to have those instances happen less and less,” says Saunders.

The coalition hopes these preventative measures will help keep school doors open all semester long.

“Hopefully… we wouldn’t have to close up intermittently, or close the entire district,” says Saunders.
