LARGO, Fla. — The Pinellas County School District is reporting six positive Coronavirus cases after the first day of school.

District officials said the cases are among three employees and three students. The cases were documented at Northeast High, Carwise Middle, the Walter Pownall Service Center and Pinellas Park and Shore Acres elementary schools.

The district has not released any further details about the cases.

The school district is using federal funds from the Cares Act to help combat the spread.

What You Need To Know

On Tuesday, the district is set to approve its application for $23 million in funding.

Pinellas Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Grego said the district already had to spend a lot of this money purchasing everything from Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to laptops for student online learning use.

And while it obviously helps, he said it does not cover all of the costs the district will incur during what will be a challenging school year.

Two Cares Act applications are going before the school board for approval: The first is for $23 million, with a second for about $2 million.

The larger amount is for sanitizing schools, PPE for staff and students, distance learning technology and training for staff and faculty for online learning.

Dr. Grego said funds from the second fund would go toward helping identify student learning gaps and provide additional services for students who need help catching up in their learning.

"It’s been a tremendous help but is it ever enough in terms of these things?  We need to be smart about what’s get the greatest returns on our investments," Dr. Grego said.  "We bought half a million masks for our students so they have cloth masks and can take that reason away and wash them on a weekly basis we bought face shields a lot of sanitizing equipment so we’re comfortable with that and very comfortable with that we couldn’t have done that without the CARES Act."
