A man is behind bars after allegedly carjacking a HART transportation van in Ruskin.
Deputies say 36-year-old Roberto Allen approached a HART van driver, who was parked in a shopping center on the 3000 block of East College Avenue, and demanded to be taken to Wimauma.
According to the sheriff's office, that demand was delivered with threats.
Deputies say the driver called 911 but then complied with the carjacker and drove him where he wanted to go – a BP gas staion on State Road 674.
“I can’t imagine what was going through their mind when somebody was telling them, just drive me somewhere. At this point in the world, you can never tell what threats to take seriously and what not to,” said Melissa Lynn, spokesperson with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
A GPS tracker in the van led deputies to the gas station in Wimauma, where they were able to catch up with and arrest Allen.
Thankfully, there were no passengers on board, and no one was hurt.
Allen faces a number of charges, including carjacking and false imprisonment.
