It’s a moment millions have waited almost all year for, and next week, the Department of Health in Pinellas County says the most vulnerable residents will begin receiving the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

According to a news release, Pinellas and Broward Counties will both serve as locations for a pilot distribution program for getting the vaccine where it’s needed most.

"The arrival of the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Pinellas gives us another way to protect the most vulnerable Pinellas residents and health-care workers who have been hard hit by the pandemic as well as those who provide their care," said Dr. Ulyee Choe, director of DOH-Pinellas said in a statement sent to the media Friday afternoon. "We are honored to be one of the first two Florida counties to begin the vaccination effort in the state."

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities for seniors will the top priority, but several questions about how that will take place have been left unanswered.

FDOH-Pinellas says this is considered “Phase 1 of the Florida vaccine distribution plan.”

The release further stated, "as plans are finalized, DOH-Broward and DOH-Pinellas will release more details on the vaccination plan. Paramedic teams will administer the vaccines. "
