SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — The latest technique to get the COVID-19 vaccine into seniors arms is by using what Gov. Ron DeSantis has dubbed vaccination “pods.”
What You Need To Know
- Vaccination pod has opened up in Sun City Center
- The state has allotted 5,000 vaccines for residents
- Vaccines will be distributed for the next five days
- Hillsborough County is getting another vaccination pod next week
A pod opened Wednesday morning at Sun City Center outside of the community hall.
“We put seniors first when other states weren’t doing that,” DeSantis said to a crowd at Sun City Center. “So you have some states where if you’re 74, the chance of you even getting on the radar is almost zero.”
Here’s a look at one of the state’s new ‘vaccination pods’ at Sun City Center. The idea is that more seniors can be helped by bringing the vaccine to them. 5,000 seniors will be vaccinated throughout the 5 day stretch @BN9 pic.twitter.com/O8vvGGX32Z

The state allotted 5,000 vaccines for seniors living in Sun City Center. Over the past few days, residents had the chance to sign up to receive one of the shots. They are distributing 125 vaccines each hour for five days until the 5,000 shots are accounted for.
Taking the vaccines to seniors in this active living community was vital for many people who have spent months inside their homes.
“They only have a golf cart because we are a golf cart community,” said Lyn Reitz with the Sun City Center Community Association. “They don’t have a vehicle anymore so this was a way for them to get the shot.”
A second vaccination pod is expected to open Thursday in Osceola County. Hillsborough County will be getting another next week.
