TAMPA, Fla. — He’s been the Buccaneers play-by-play announcer for more than 30 years.

Now Gene Deckerhoff gets to call his second Super Bowl.

“Tampa Bay is heading to the Super Bowl!” Deckerhoff broadcasted over The Buccaneers Radio Network as the team beat the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game.

“It feels great to be in the post season. It’s been a while. 13 years. Post season games are hard to win but the Buccaneers did it,” Deckerhoff said in an interview.

The award-winning broadcaster and member of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame has been calling Bucs games since 1989, along with Florida State football and basketball games since 1979.

He says this Bucs team has been one of the most fun to call, with one type of play really standing out.

“I think any play with a pass to Rob Gronkowski. I say, ‘Holy Gronk-amoly!’ I worked on that line for a while. Gronk finally made that first touchdown grab. Holy Gronk-amoly!”

This year’s post season run brings back fond memories of the 2002 season.

Deckerhoff, 75, said he remembers one call he made during that Super Bowl, where he might have declared victory a bit early.

“I said, ‘The Bucs are going to win the Super Bowl!’ It was the third quarter. You’re not supposed to do that,” Deckerhoff recalled. “This time, I’d love to be able to say the Bucs are going to win Super Bowl LV in the third quarter but I think it will be closer than that.”

He sees a lot of that ‘02 team in this year’s, hoping for a Bucs victory in the home stadium he knows so well.

“There are similarities,” he said. “Good kicking? That’s a given. Good defense? That’s a given. And this year, the greatest of all time at QB. Buccaneers should have the edge in my opinion! Go Bucs!”

Even though the Bucs are at home for the big game, Deckerhoff says he’ll actually be broadcasting in a different spot in the stadium than he usually does, since the NFL is using his booth.
