TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County School District announced in-person high school graduation ceremonies will be held this year at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Superintendent Addison Davis said the district will put out all the specifics by the end of this week and he also said some other key senior events will also be held this year.

“I know these are memorable events, so we will be making certain that these are approved through our guidelines, and continue working with our local medical experts,” said Superintendent Davis.

In his update at Tuesday’s school board meeting, the superintendent said several other events will also be held, including awards events, athletic banquets, yearbook signing, cap, gown and ring distribution, senior breakfast and luncheon, outdoor field day and slideshow, baccalaureate, and a drive-thru celebration.

Davis said the in person graduation ceremonies will be safe, and socially distanced.

Students will only be allowed two guests each, and the district will stream the ceremony for any family members unable to attend.

"I am very excited about it being in-person because I honestly didn't think we were going to have one due to the pandemic still going on," staid student Jayla Troupe.

Another student, Brianna Drummond, said the graduation will allow her to send her senior year on a high note.

"Everything is looking a lot more positive and looking up, so we're really excited to have one this year," Drummond said.

All graduation ceremonies will be held between May 24 and June 3.

In Pinellas County, in-person graduations also are being discussed. No decision has been announced yet.
