Later this year, there will be room for more.
The City of Zephyrhills is moving forward with a $6.5 million plan to expand one of the runways there.
For the first time, it will allow bigger, corporate-style jets to land and take off from the airport.
“It’s constant improvements,” said City Manager Billy Poe.
Poe says there’s growing demand for bigger planes to be able to operate there as the area continues to grow.
“With more developments, housing, and with the industrial development we have and are hoping to see, it’ll draw a larger aircraft here. Corporate jets,” Poe said.
Ultimately, the city, which owns the airport, wants even more there.
Long-term plans call for a storage area for jets and a terminal, among other improvements. The airport currently has 50,000 take-offs and landings per year, according to the city.
That’s because Zephyrhills and the surrounding area continues to grow.
“Zephyrhills is definitely one of those fast-growing communities,” said Public Information Officer Stephanie Vazquez. “It makes sense that the airport is undergoing these improvements because the city is being very proactive so that we can handle the population increase.”
In fact, she says Zephyrhills has more than 2,000 new homes in development right now and more are on the way.
Construction on the new runway starts next month. It’s expected to be ready in November.
