That’s how firefighters refer to Fire Station 13 in Tampa.
It’s the busiest in the city and they say they need some help.
“You get no sleep,” said firefighter Joe Greco, who is head of the local firefighters union. “If you’re not going on a call, you’re doing a report. Or trying to grab a bite to eat. Or maybe getting a 30-minute nap in between calls.”
Things get so busy at Station 13 that the firefighters even have a logo of Freddie Krueger to represent their station.
“You don’t want to sleep if Freddy is around,” Greco said. “In this case, it’s that you’re never going to sleep again because you’re going to be running to calls all night.”
Station 13 serves North Tampa, including the areas near USF and Busch Gardens.
City Councilman Luis Viera says first responders answer 10,000 calls a year there, making it one of the busiest in the entire country as well.
He is now pushing fellow city leaders for a public safety master plan. That would include a new fire station to ease the burden on 13.
“We are in a crisis mode out here in North Tampa,” Viera said in an interview. “The men and women of 13 need immediate help. And we’ve got to provide that.”
The city recently added two extra units to Station 13, including another engine. But with lots of growth in the area, some fear that won’t keep up with calls for help.
“While the ‘Nightmare on Annie Street’ might be a joke among the firefighters here, for the city, this is a direct challenge for us to do better,” Viera said.
The fire chief will be providing an update on Station 13 at Thursday’s City Council meeting.
A decision to open another station could come later this summer.
