PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — It’s a tune St. Pete residents know and love, and it was a tune that was cut short way too soon.
What You Need To Know
- Somone destroyed the first piano a few weeks ago
- But local artist Kayla Cox created a new one
“To see it just smashed for, to me, seems like no reason whatsoever, it’s just interesting that people could do something like that,” said artist Kayla Cox.
The piano was vandalized a few weeks ago, leaving it not only unplayable but totally destroyed.
“It was upsetting to us and so obviously so very many people in the community, that we just kind of felt like we needed to do something,” said Cox.
After a search on Craigslist for an affordable piano and a couple of gallons of paint, Cox was able to bring music back to downtown St. Pete in the loudest way possible.
“To me the rainbow just kind of includes all the colors, which really makes me feel like St. Petersburg is so inclusive and bright and happy and it just completely made sense to me,” said Cox.
And slowly but surely, that sound of St. Pete is coming back too.
“Hopefully just bring back some joy to the area that was taken away,” said Cox.
