United Way officials said these tax credits can really help families who may be struggling, which is why they partnered with the IRS to host the events.
“It's focusing on those individuals who do not need to file. That's anyone who doesn't meet the threshold to file, so we want to make sure they're aware this is happening because we want to make sure they receive that credit,” said Margarita Perez, a senior manager with the United Way.
Perez said it is nearly impossible to even put a number on the families who are eligible to receive the child tax credit, but do not know how to go about filing for it.
She said for some of them, the money could be just the help they need to get back on their feet after a challenging year.
At the events, there will tax professionals available to help determine if they need to file taxes and prepare them if they do. They can also help families file for the CTC if they find they do not need to file taxes.
“That's another reason we want people to come to the center, not just focus on CTC, but if you have any issues with the IRS, or any questions you might have, this is the opportunity for tax payers to be there, because there's no appointment necessary, you don't have to call ahead, you can just come and walk in and they're going to be on call,” said Perez.
