AUGUST 4 STORY

The popular voice heard before most Tampa Bay Lightning home games is out of the ICU after recently being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Sonya Bryson-Kirksey has been hospitalized since mid-July.

Her friend Thomas Schooley, who established a GoFundMe page to help Bryson-Kirksey, tweeted the news Wednesday.

"She is out of ICU and now in a regular room working on her lungs and breathing," he wrote.

Bryson-Kirksey has been signing the anthem at Bolts games for eight seasons. Our newsgathering partner, the Tampa Bay Times, said she was vaccinated in March but that underlying health conditions made her more susceptible to the virus.

She had been moved to the ICU about a week ago.
