ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Keith McCants, who played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the early 1990s, has died.
He was 53.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s office and the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Thursday that they are involved in the death investigation of McCants.
The Sheriff’s office was called to 2833 62nd Ave. N. in St. Petersburg for an unresponsive male.
McCants, who played college football at Alabama, was the fourth overall pick of the 1990 NFL Draft.
He played three seasons in Tampa, recording 12 sacks and 156 tackles.
He later played with the Houston Oilers and Arizona Cardinals, with 1995 being his last season.
McCants fell on hard times after his playing days and was mentioned in an ESPN 30 for 30 special about athletes who had lost their money.
