ST. PETERSBURGH, Fla. — Former Pinellas County commissioner and current St. Petersburg mayoral hopeful Ken Welch announced over the weekend that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Welch — who was one of the top two finishers during the mayoral primary on Aug. 24 — had already self-quarantined himself after coming in contact with a staffer who tested positive for the virus, according to a Sept. 2 Facebook post.

"I'll be isolating (and virtual) until I receive the results," he said in the post. "Stay vigilant folks."

Two days later he made another Facebook post, this time sharing a the results summary of an apparent COVID-19 test.

"So this is what a positive #COVID19 test looks like," he said in the post. "It's so important to get tested, and get vaccinated.

"I feel fine, but with this knowledge I'm isolating and not spreading the virus to others. Stay vigilant folks!"

No other information on Welch's condition was immediately released.

Welch will face St. Petersburg city councilman Robert Blackmon in the race for mayor during the general election on Nov. 2.
