  • Crash, shootings, closure of I-4 thwarted eastbound I-4 traffic throughout the early morning

  • Sheriff Grady Judd said female shooting victim likely won't survive

During a Friday morning news conference, Sheriff Grady Judd said it was a "messed up situation by a bunch of messed up people" and called it a "riding, driving gun battle."

The incident happened shortly after midnight.

Judd said Ronald Donovan, 38, of Brevard County and a member of a motorcycle gang, and at least two other motorcycles were traveling on I-4 eastbound toward Orlando when riders from another gang passed them.

Donovan shot at one of the drivers, Judd said, and that person fired back in self defense, hitting a 33-year-old woman on Donovan's motorcycle.

That woman is not likely to survive, Judd said.

"Do you remember watching the old westerns where the outlaws were chasing each other through country side and shooting each other?" Judd said. "Well, let's advance to 2021, the same thing happened last night and instead of riding horses they were on motorcycles."

The sheriff said the investigation has been difficult to piece together.

"Nobody's telling us the truth," Judd said.

Judd said there was "skirmishing and driving about 100 mph" by the parties involved.

He said there is no one remaining at large and no further threat to the community.

Deputies also responded a short time later to another injured motorcyclist, 36, near the intersection of Lake Wilson Road and Osceola Polk Line Road.

That injured motorcyclist, a 36-year-old Osceola County man, was transported to a hospital with a gunshot wound.

Judd said Donovan wouldn't cooperate with authorities who responded to the scene. He was arrested at the scene.

Judd said "all evidence indicates that (Donovan) started the shooting."

According to Judd, Donovan is facing charges of attempted 2nd degree felony murder (likely to be upgraded to felony murder), attempted 1st degree murder, resisting arrest and battery on a law enforcement officer.

Interstate 4 eastbound was shut down to through traffic at CR557 at approximately 3:30 a.m. The roadway began to reopen at 6:11 a.m.

All the eastbound lanes were reopened by 9:30 a.m.
