PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A good Samaritan jumped in to help the two children of a woman pinned between a gas pump that caught fire and her vehicle in Palm Harbor on Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The woman was killed when exposed fuel from the gas pump erupted in fire, authorities said.

According to the release, Jared Pierson grabbed fire extinguishers located by the gas pumps and moved the children away from the flames. 

The incident happened just after 2 p.m. at a Circle K at 3470 East Lake Business, north of Tampa Road, in Palm Harbor.

FHP said a 66-year-old woman driving a 2006 Nissan backed into a gas pump, causing it to overturn onto the victim. According to officials, the victim's two children, ages 11 and 14, were initially in the car when it caught fire and got out of the vehicle to help their mother. 

Firefighters were able to put out the flames. The State Fire Marshal's Office now is investigating.

The victim's family has set up a GoFundMe page.

In addition, the family released a statement that said:

"For everyone reaching out, my family and I thank you for your kind words and loving messages We will get back to you all in due time. As of right now, there will be a prayer service for my mother at 7 pm tonight at St Ignatius Church in Tarpon Springs. Much love, the Caballes Family"
