NAPLES, Fla. — A maintenance worker was seriously injured Wednesday after being attacked by a tiger at a southwest Florida zoo.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the man entered an unauthorized area near a tiger enclosure at the Naples Zoo.

Authorities said it appears the man was either trying to pet or feed the animal, both of which are unauthorized.

The tiger grabbed the man by his arm and pulled him into the enclosure.

Deputies said they were forced to shoot and kill the animal. The man was seriously injured and taken to an area hospital.

Zoo officials said the man was a member of a third-party cleaning company, which is hired to clean the gift shop and bathrooms, not the animal enclosures.
