He decided to start the school as an option for low and middle income families who don't want to attend struggling neighborhood schools, but can't afford a private education for their children.
"If I can provide an option to that family, to that student who is motivated, then I have achieved a lot," Patel said.
According to the principal, Patel Elementary will stress project-based learning. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and research projects to further their knowledge on subjects.
"I'm excited," said 5-year-old Louna Carnell who will be starting kindergarten there next year.
Carnell gets priority to attend the new school because her mother works at Patel High School next door.
For the first year, Patel Elementary will only enroll students in kindergarten through second grade. Then, a new grade level will be added each year.
There is a limit on the number of students who will be able to attend the school - 90 children per grade level.
