PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A public memorial service was held Friday for a beloved Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy.
Family, colleagues and members of the public gathered to remember and honor Deputy Abigail Bieber.
Bieber was shot and killed Jan. 30 by a sheriff’s office detective, with whom she was romantically involved.
That detective, identified as Daniel Leyden, then killed himself.
They were on vacation near St. Augustine with other deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The funeral service started with a tribute to Bieber, with a slideshow of pictures. Others spoke about the friendly 30-year-old deputy they described as a bright light.
"Abby was taken from us because of pure evil and darkness,” said Captain Preston Hollis with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. “But Abby's light shines on."
In lieu of flowers, Bieber’s family said they would prefer donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club, Mary Lee's House and Maxx & Me Pet Rescue, three causes that were close to Bieber's heart.
