WINTER PARK, Fla. – A Winter Park wedding turned violent Saturday night after police shot and killed a man they say was fighting with guests.

  • Two officers responded to a call that Knight was assaulting guests at about 9:40 p.m.

  • Knight allegedly attacked one officer, knocking him unconscious

The police department received a 911 call around 9:30 p.m. about a “violent male that was intoxicated, irate, and causing a disturbance,” the police report stated.

The male, identified as 38-year-old Daniel Knight, allegedly punched an officer who was trying to separate Knight from a guest at the wedding — knocking the officer to the ground and rendering him unconscious.

According to the release, Knight went after a second officer who deployed his taser gun. However, Knight continued to strike the officer, prompting him to fire his gun at Knight.

Winter Park Fire-Rescue pronounced Knight dead at the hospital.

“This is a tragic event that has resulted in a loss of life and we empathize with all those involved and impacted,” said Acting Chief of Police Pam Marcum.

Knight’s sister said he was attending his niece’s wedding. 

 

Both officers were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and has placed the officer who fired his weapon on administrative leave.
