TAMPA, Fla. - For the first time in four years, MacDill Air Force Base is back open to the public this weekend for Tampa Bay AirFest.

It’s a chance for people to tour aircraft on base and to watch air shows, including the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels.

Base officials expect more than 150,000 people to attend this weekend, which is the first AirFest since 2018. The event scheduled in 2020 was canceled.

For Air Force Maj. Joshua Gunderson, it’s a homecoming. He graduated from Bloomingdale High School and used to come to the show as a kid.

Now, Gunderson is back at the show but as an F-22 demonstration pilot.

“It’s a huge honor to be here,” he said. “And what’s really cool, growing up in Tampa, I used to come to this air show as a kid all of the time. When I was 11, I met the demo pilots, which is now what I’m doing.”

AirFest goers were able to see pilots like Gunderson and also aircraft up close and personal with a tour of new and old military planes.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are always a big draw, performing stunts in the sky at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Gates open at 8 a.m. and admission is free.
