Florida Forest Service is conducting a 100 acre controlled burn within the Citrus Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest for hazardous fuel reduction and ecosystem management today. The fire will be east of Holder Mine Campgrounds between trails 5, 7 and 10.
The Florida Forest Service also advises drivers to use caution if they drive through smoke.
Most controlled burns in Florida are conducted during the winter and early spring, though prescribed burning during the summer months is important for several plant and animal species.
Florida leads the nation in using prescribed fire to clear out overgrowth and prevent risk for catastrophic wildfires which can lead to devastation to communities, according to the Florida Forest Service.
