OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A road project to accommodate growth in Osceola County is coming with some unwanted changes for one neighborhood in Kissimmee.

What You Need To Know

  • Osceola County is closing the median of Simpson Road at Flamboyan Street

  • Drivers from Tierra Del Sol won’t be able to turn left out of the subdivision

  • Drivers will have to make a U-turn instead

Osceola County plans to widen Simpson Road from four to six lanes in Kissimmee. But it will mean closing off the median at Flamboyan Street.

That will put an end to left turns out of and into the Tierra Del Sol subdivision.

“That’s going to be kind of hard for us,” said Louis Casillas, who has lived in the neighborhood for the past five years.

The project is to help accommodate traffic volumes on Simpson Road. There have been 11 crashes at the intersection in the past three years.

An Osceola County spokesperson said safety standards are the reason officials are closing the median and getting rid of the left turns to and from Flamboyan.

Drivers from Tierra del Sol instead will have to make a U-turn at Buenaventura Boulevard or Lakeside Drive.

“I don’t have a lot of (room for) turning,” Casillas said. “So I have to back up, and this is a small car. Imagine if I have a mobile home, or if you’re towing a trailer.”

The county said the widening project will give extra room for U-turns.

Construction on the project isn’t supposed to begin until 2026.
