Roughly 93,000 people are in new hurricane evacuation zones. That includes about 34,000 homes that have been shifted into higher risk zones.
This is the first time in six years that the map has been updated. To create the new map, the county used updated surge models from the National Hurricane Center along with county elevation data.
Hot spots with the most changes to Flood Zone A include Oldsmar, Tarpon Springs, and Gulfport.
Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson warns that if you're now in a higher risk zone, it's important to make an evacuation plan for your family now.
"That's my big concern now because it's been so long since we've had a big direct hit, that if you're not staying up to date on your evacuation zone or if you've lived here forever and you say 'Oh its always missed us,'" he said. "That's my concern when the big one comes, and some day it will."
Henderson stressed not only should homeowners prepare now, but also residents who live on boats.
"Another thing we don't want to do is put our emergency response personnel in danger trying to get to you," he said.
