ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The St. Pete Pride parade returned Saturday for the first time since 2019 to a huge turnout.
For many attendees, it was a welcome sight after the pandemic and recent news events.
“If anything, it takes your mind off of the bad things that are happening,” said Kara Young of St. Petersburg.
As folks gathered, they were reminded of recent controversies, like the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe vs. Wade and Florida’s passing of the Parental Rights in Education Law, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
“It’s a scary time for women. It’s a scary time for us in general. Being here, this is quintessential pride,” Young said.
But seeing thousands come out from all over for St. Pete Pride, many were happy just to be together again.
“It’s great to see everyone's support. It’s very refreshing, if anything, just to see that we can all get along for something, despite what’s going on around us,” said Destiny Herbert of Clearwater.
Organizers estimated about 300,000 people came out for the 20th anniversary, making it one of the largest pride events in the country.
A lot of local businesses and groups marched in the parade, a sense of community that many felt is needed right now.
“It’s a great time to be together and fight for something we believe in,” Young said.
St Petersburg Police say they are taking security very seriously for this weekend’s events.
They say they are all hands on deck and other agencies are helping as well.
