When Hillsborough High School senior Jazmyn Wajd says that when she started running track at 5 years old, she didn’t know her potential would lead her to make school history.

What You Need To Know

  • Jazmyn Wajd started running track when she was 5 years old

  • She ended her senior year with two state titles

  • Her coach is very proud of her accomplishments

She may also not have known why she started running track, but she does know that she hasn’t been able to stop.

“Really, honestly, when you run, it’s like in your mind," she told Spectrum Sports' Katya Guillaume. "It’s all up to your mind. Whatever you tell yourself that you’re about to do, you’re really about to do it as soon as the gun goes off, and that’s so like crazy to me. Every time, every time. And I surprise myself every time.”

The Hillsborough senior, who just graduated, may have been running track since she was a little girl, but she’ll be the first to tell you the sport still surprises her.

“You basically determine whether this goes good or bad,” she said, and it’s gone well for her.

Jazmyn closed out her senior year with two state titles — the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles.

“My goal was probably to just run track and do my best and PR … put on a show,” she said.

The show she put on also made history at Hillsborough High.

She became the first female athlete to win two individual gold medals — something her dad, and coach, Hassan Wajd says he is truly proud of.

“To see her take all the little wisdom and tad little bits that I’ve given her over the years, and put it together and have the success that she’s had is definitely awesome,” he said.

These two have been inseparable throughout Jazmyn’s career so far, something that will change once she heads to Washington to run for the Howard University Bisons.

“For her to graduate," he said, "to get into Howard and to also get a scholarship, it’s a testament to her … all her work.”

The track star is a little divided on her feelings about leaving him behind.

“I feel like I push myself and I discipline myself very well, but I won’t know until I’m off on my own without him there, honestly," she said.

Hassan, though, says he’s confident she’ll excel at Howard, the same way she did at Hillsborough High School.
