HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Four schools in Hillsborough County that double as emergency shelters have been equipped with high capacity generators.

The emergency operations center finished the installs in July.

What You Need To Know

  • 4 Hillsborough County schools used as emergency shelters have high capacity generators

  • LOCATIONS: Benito, Burnett and Barrington middle schools in Tampa and Strawberry Crest High School in Plant City

  • Generators allow the county to get the shelters open more rapidly

  • Ian reaches hurricane status, rapid strengthening expected Monday

And with shelters being activated starting Monday, the locations will get their first big test since Hurricane Irma five years ago.

Benito, Burnett and Barrington middle schools in Tampa and Strawberry Crest High School in Plant City all now have high capacity generators.

Hillsborough Emergency Management said the new generators won't really make conditions any more comfortable at the shelters but it allows the county to get the shelters open more rapidly.

“What’s so impressive and special about this is that it is a county owned generator that is placed here at the shelter,” said EOC Section Chief Katja Miller. “It doesn't require us to go through that leasing and renting process where we have to place that prior to an event."

If you aren't in a special needs shelter, don't expect working air conditioning or charging stations for any devices. Do expect to be sleeping in classrooms on floors with other families.

And keep this in mind if you are seeking shelter space this week: The shelters available are only open during immediate impacts of the storm for life saving measures. They are not equipped to serve as longtime shelters after the storm passes.
