TAMPA, Fla. — Each year, Americans observe Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors were of Hispanic and Latin origin.
The observation started in 1968 and expanded to its current 30-day format in 1988.
Bay News 9 anchor Roy De Jesus celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with prominent local Latin Tampa residents and discusses the past and what the future holds.
“The community has always been there and continues to grow,” said Maribel Garrett, the city of Tampa’s Hispanic Liaison. “I think in many ways we have found our voice and can share what our needs are. I think that’s a very important thing when it comes to the Hispanic community.”
Garrett, along with Hispanic Professional Women’s Association co-founder Margarita Gonzalez and HPWA President-Elect Yvonne Pelaez, discuss the importance of celebrating Tampa’s Hispanic community and its contributions.
The groups also stress the importance of advancing their organizations and engaging with younger latinos to make sure their voices continue to be heard, celebrated and appreciated in the Bay area.
