LAKELAND, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested a Lakeland man Sunday accused of arson.

Deputies say 30-year-old Luke Neely threw a "Molotov cocktail"-type weapon at a residence in the neighborhood of Plantation Ridge.

When a deputy arrived around 8 a.m. the Sheriff's Office said he witnessed Neely getting into a pickup truck and fleeing the area.

Deputies said they attempted a traffic stop, but Neely continued south on US-98 and onto I-4 westbound. Maneuvers were used to try and slow the truck, which were eventually successful as deputies were able to block and ram the truck ending a pursuit.

Officials said Neely was in possession of an "AR-style" rifle when he was stopped. Polk deputies immediately engaged him, firing at Neely, incapacitating him. Deputies then disarmed him, including another firearm he had on his person, and began treating his wounds. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy involved use of force because the incident occurred in Hillsborough County.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office crime scene unit is assisting with the investigation at the scene.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating the arson and fleeing-to-elude incidents occurring in Polk County.

"We are in the early stages of this investigation," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "We thank the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for independently investigating this use of force and we appreciate the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office assistance with the scene investigation. One of our deputies sustained a wrist injury, but other than that, the only person who was injured is the arsonist who fled from our deputies and threatened them. For this I am very thankful."

Neely was arrested by the PCSO in 2016 and charged with disorderly conduct, using a firearm under the influence of alcohol, and resisting arrest. He was Baker Acted by the PCSO in 2020.
