What You Need To Know

  • Volusia County deputies shot and injured an armed man Sunday after receiving a call about an armed man who was threatening other people

  • Officials said the man was experiencing an "erratic mental health episode" at the time, and that it was the second time deputies had visited the home this year

  • Body camera footage of the incident was released on Monday. Officials with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said they will be reviewing the footage as part of their investigation

Collmar is also charged with violation of his parole. As of Monday, officials reported that he was still at the hospital with wounds suffered during the interaction, but is expected to recover.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call just after 1 p.m. Sunday about someone threatening others with a weapon. Deputies say they fired at the suspect after he began coming toward them.

According to officials the suspect was stabilized and taken to the hospital.

In a release, Sheriff's Office officials said Collmar was experiencing an "erratic mental health episode at his parents' home" at the time of the incident. Records show it was the second call in three weeks involving Collmar.

Officials said they made unsuccessful attempts to negotiate and subdue Collmar before the shooting.

Spectrum News spoke with a neighbor, Vickie Luksan, who said she has lived along Lakeshore Drive in New Smyrna Beach since 1991. She said the area is usually quiet, but the mood changed Sunday afternoon as deputies filled the street and crime scene tape blocked part of the road.

Luksan said the entire episode was unnerving for her.

“She’s my, she’s my guard dog,” said Luksan about her 12-year-old dog, Sophie.

She doesn’t know her neighbors very well, but said just a month ago the sheriff’s office was at that same home. Luksan said law enforcement asked them questions but they weren’t aware of anything.

Officials said that visit was made on Jan. 17 after Collmar's mother reported to deputies that he was armed, screaming, paranoid and possibly hallucinating during an apparent mental health episode.

“I really don’t know, I don’t know that much, I just only know like I said about last month,” Luksan said.

She explained, her husband knows the neighbors because he does construction and he lets them take what he is getting rid of, and their interactions have been positive.

“The neighbor asks him if he could get that stuff, I guess they salvage or whatever you call it, take it get money out of it,” said Luksan. “He had no problem because then it saved him from going to the dump.”

After thinking about the incident, Luksan said she is hoping to make some security changes on her property.

“I told my husband, I said I want to get different cameras up,” she said.

Body camera footage of the incident was released on Monday. Officials with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said they will be reviewing the footage as part of their investigation.
