BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a Hernando High School student.
According to authorities, deputies responded to calls of a shooting at Hazel Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
When deputies arrived, they found two victims with gunshot wounds. Authorities said one of the shooting victims, 17-year-old Isabella Angelina Scavelli later died at an area hospital.
Authorities said the suspect had already left the scene and a search for a gunman was started.
Scavelli, a junior, was part of the school tennis team and involved in student government, Hernando School District officials said in a release. She was described by her teachers as an energetic, kind and a joyful student.
Grief counselors and therapy dogs were on campus Wednesday. No information has been released on the other shooting victim.
No one ever expects to wake up to the sound of gunfire. Which is why Bennie Howard thought someone was knocking on her door at 11:30 last night.
Bennie said, “I had been asleep in the chair and I was just sitting there and all of a sudden, I heard this bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. I said, what?”
She’s lived at her home on Hazel Avenue in South Brooksville for over a decade. Her street is usually pretty quiet, but not last night.
Because when she looked out the window, all she saw were red and blue flashing lights from sheriff’s deputies. “It’s sad it did, you know? It’s real sad.” said Bennie.
The sheriff’s office said deputies arrived around 11:30 last night to find two girls shot.
One of them was 17-year-old Isabella Scavell. She later died at the hospital.
“She didn’t live half of her life she could have lived, you know?” said Bennie.
Bennie didn’t know Isabella, but has grandchildren her age. She said she can’t imagine something so horrific, so close to where she lives.
“It’s sad to lose somebody in your family like that. It’s bad any way you lose them. But that’s horrible.” continued Bennie.
It’s devastation that can be felt here and at Hernando High School, where Isabella was a junior. According to the school, she was on the tennis team and a part of the student government.
Meanwhile, the work continues for the sheriff’s office to find whoever is responsible. They said this was not random and are confident they can solve the case soon.
